2021 Lissner Muschelkalk Gewurztraminer
The Muschelkalk or German for ‘shell-bearing limestone’—is a sequence of sedimentary rock stretching through central and western Europe. This Middle Triassic (240 to 230 million years) deposit, originally formed in a land-locked sea, and its banks contain a plethora of fossil shells found on the surface or subsurface. The vines of this particular plot, like many of the domaine, are surrounded by woodland; thus Bruno terms it ‘the marine within the forest.’ The grapes are harvested by hand and sorted twice before being direct pressed as whole clusters using a
gentle pneumatic press. The wine isn’t fined or filtered and it is aged 12+ months in large Alsatian wood barrels. This wine is brimming with dried stone fruit, honeycomb and oolong tea. Pair this wine with a smoked pork chop with grilled onions and apples, a quiche loaded with veggies and fontina, spicy Asian dishes, including West Asia. A very versatile and stable wine!
